Why PFL Machine Vices?

PFL has been manufacturing precision clamping vices for over 20 years. These are not generic workshop vises, they are precision instruments, designed to deliver repeatable clamping accuracy of approximately 5 μm on CNC milling machines, grinding machines, and precision measuring fixtures.

Every PFL vice body is machined from highest-grade hardened steel, then precision ground on all reference surfaces. The homogeneous construction and compact design ensure that clamping forces are distributed evenly, without flexing or distortion. The clamping screw itself is hardened and ground, protected by a stainless steel cover that seals out chips, coolant, and debris from the lead mechanism.

What does "5 μm clamping accuracy" actually mean?

It means that when you clamp, release, and reclamp the same workpiece in the vice, the position of the part relative to the machine table repeats within approximately 5 μm (0.005 mm). This repeatability comes from the precision-ground guideways, the parallelism of the jaws, and the rigidity of the body. In practical terms, you can remove a part for inspection and reclamp it for a second operation without losing your datum.

What is the difference between single and double clamping?

Single clamping (C series) has one fixed jaw and one movable jaw — the standard configuration. Double clamping (DC series) has a fixed center jaw with two movable outer jaws, allowing you to clamp two identical workpieces simultaneously in one setup. The DC series effectively doubles your throughput on parts that are small enough to fit side by side.

What sizes are available?

Can PFL vices be used for surface grinding?

Yes. PFL vices are excellent for surface grinding because all reference surfaces are precision ground to tight flatness and parallelism tolerances. The controlled clamping tension is particularly important in grinding, over-clamping a thin part causes it to spring back after release, producing a concave surface. With a PFL vice, you can apply just enough force to hold the part securely without introducing clamping distortion.

How does the sine table combination work?

The PFL sine table mounts underneath a PFL vice, creating an angular clamping system. You set the desired angle by placing calibrated gauge blocks under the sine bar, the sine of the angle multiplied by the center distance gives the gauge block height. The workpiece is then clamped in the vice at that precise angle. This combination is used for grinding tapers, inspecting angular features, and machining compound angles.

What makes PFL vices different from standard workshop vises?

Standard workshop vises are designed for general clamping where accuracy is secondary to holding strength. PFL vices are precision instruments, every surface is ground, the jaw travel is guided on precision-lapped ways, the lead screw is protected from contamination, and the body is stress-relieved to prevent distortion.
